I was a little surprised to see a juv male Peregrine standing in the water NE corner before chasing a Pied Wag then disappeared to SW low over the Res. Barry Clarkson has suggested to me that the Peregrine may be of the race tundrius. It shows whitish underparts with brown streaking, a thin moustachial and a pronounced super. Compare this pic with one taken by Graham Catley at http://pewit.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html (you have to scroll down a fair way) which shows a (more typical?) bird with brown on buff unders and a heavier moustachial. Also here's one from Delaware http://www.whatbird.com/forums/forums/t ... 20062.aspx which looks a little more like the Covenham bird. I'd be grateful to anyone with more expert knowledge than me to comment on the provenance of the bird I saw at Cov Res. John |

john i am no expert but i have seen the tundra race in nothern canada and the thing that stood out most was the size of the bird, looked deeper chested and heavier than our typical peregrine in fact at first i thought i had a dark morph gyr, and photos are very difficult to judge size. ![]() terry whalin ![]() ![]() |
