I glanced out of the house window this morning and spotted what appeared to be a Heron flying straight for the house. I had about ten seconds to view it before it passed over, at no great height, but in that time, with the naked eye, I had noted that it was small, dark and with a wingbeat much quicker than that of Grey Heron. I dashed to a bedroom window on the other side of the house and saw the bird fly east towards Caistor. If anything it seemed to be losing a little height before being lost to view. I gathered up my optics and set off in the Caistor direction, parking at Audleby, checked the small ponds there, then took the public footpath to Fonaby - finding a Whinchat on the way. Checked the fishing lakes there. Afterwards I called at the Caistor Fisheries on Brigg road, explained what had happened and got permission to check their four fishing ponds. Unfortunately, again with no success. Frustrating, to say the least! Roy |
