Post subject:  Kirkby Pits 28 Jun 09 - Wood Sandpiper still

A dusk visit between 1930 and 2130 hrs I observed:

1 Wood Sandpiper present on Northern island.
2 Little Ringed Plover with one looks like its sitting.
2 Pairs of Avocet - 1 pair has juveniles nearly the size of parents, other pair young looks 1-2 weeks old and she is still brooding them.
1 Pair of Oystercatcher and 1 juvenile - so 2 have been lost here.
3 Lapwing
2 Teal
1 Green Woodpecker
24 Common Tern with 25 young of various ages.
6 Cormorant
1 Chiffchaff
1 Reed Bunting
1 Willow Warbler
1 Reed Warbler
1 Turtle Dove
6 Pochard
c30 Coot
c40 Mallard with various ages of young.

Notables on pit N of reserve:
c200 Greylag Geese
1 Mute Swan with 5 cygnets

Landfill access road:
Another 1 Turtle Dove
1 Willow Warbler
1 Pied Wagtail

Rear footpath and pit SW of landfill site:
1 Yellowhammer
1 Moorhen
2 Reed warbler
1 Great Crested Grebe with 1 juvenile
3 Coot with 1 juv
1 Mallard with 6 ducklings
2 Little Grebes with 1 on a nest
1 Grey Heron
and a flyover by 2 Little Egrets.
