Kirkby GP reserve 8 May 09

Post subject:  Kirkby GP reserve 8 May 09
Early morning visit between 0350 and 0610 this morning observed:
57 Common Tern, some have had young hatch - 2 prs with 3 young each and another pr with 2 young.
2 Oystercatchers with 2 young, back on N island. I think male has injured left leg as he is limping bad and holding it up.
2 Turtle Doves
2 Black-tailed Godwits
2 Cuckoo
1 Tawny Owl
1 drk Shoveler
1 Kingfisher
1 Little Ringed Plover
5 Cormorant
2 Whitethroat
2 Chiffchaff
1 Reed Bunting
3 Willow Warbler ( 2 were a pair)
2 Long-tailed Tit families with about 5 young each (hard to count and try and keep track of them all!)
1 Blue Tit with 2 young
2 Blackcap
1 Garden Warbler
4 Blackbird
1 Pied Wagtail with 3 young
1 Shelduck with 8 young
1 Great Tit with 1 young
4 Wren
1 Reed Warbler
Mallard with young

Very noticeable the amount of young seen today with parents feeding them, probably after yesterdays washout and all trying to catch up with grub!

My father and I went on Saturday 30th May, we saw 2 Oysercatchers with 3 young, no injured left-leg. It must have happened within that time frame.

You don't think, someone has taken one of the young? They were quite big when we saw them, they couldn't have been prey, could they?

I did my BTO TTV on Sat 6 Jun and there were two then, so window is 30 May to 6 Jun. Chicks have been active around reserve and have been seen venturing to the far bank (opposite hide). Foxes have been seen on that bank and on reserve lately (bridleway) and would of been probably been ideal size (much smaller than a chicken as a size example!).

Male (assumed as the female I think tends to stay with chicks more) may have been involved in the "lost" chicks defence, or a totally un-related incident causing the injury....... I just can't be there 24 hours to watch them all!! :lol:

A juvenile gull was looking pretty ill near the N island this morning, did'nt look like it would make it through the day!
