It appears to be an encouraging year for Peregrines in Lincolnshire with possibly around half a dozen pairs. We are very pleased that the first of Bob Sheppard's four (so far) Peregrine trays is being used this year. I helped him erect this on St Wulframs Church in Grantham on a freezing cold day last year, with help from the church volunteers. (It's quite an effort lugging all the materials, tools and gravel required up the narrow stair-wells as the tray/box has to be made in-situ). Although there is also a webcam installed, http://www.stwulframs.org.uk/home/falcons.php the camera signal has very poor reception due to the thick stonework, but it is hoped that can be improved later. The Peregrines here had four eggs which have now hatched, and we believe that this is the same female which bred at St Wulframs, Grantham in 2007 and nearby in 2008. She was ringed as a chick on the East Lancashire / West Yorkshire border in 2006, so she bred in her first year - and on a man-made site having been raised on a natural crag. Well done Bob and Alan! I can only begin to imagine the time and effort that goes in to a project like this! I guess seeing a successful conclusion is very rewarding! Lets hope the webcam get sorted out soon….. In the future I would really like to see the Bird Club getting involved with real practical conservation along these lines. What do other members think?
