Steve,
70+ is a great total and it is certainly a wonderful sight to see that number of Waxwings in action. To think that only a week ago there were just 12 in the Kenilworth Road area ......then 19 or so midweek..... and now 70+. ( Congrats on your aerial shot). :)

From the photo you posted today of the singleton Waxwing, it looks as if the Kenilworth Road berry crop should last at least another couple of days or so even with 70+ around.

Regards,

Freddy

Whereabouts are they in relation to the railway station?

Katherine,
From maps, it doesn't look as if Kenilworth Road is within reasonable walking distance of Grantham Railway Station, but it is on a bus route.

Perhaps one of the Grantham members could advise.

Regards,

Freddy

Hi Katherine

You would have to walk to the bus station, about 5 minutes away from the train station and then ask for the Alma Park bus - possibly a number 1.

Hope this helps a little ;)

My wife and I ,plus our Morky, have just returned home to BBH (10.00pm) after a pleasant day spent with our daughter, grandson (and later) son-in-law at their house in Harlaxton near Grantham. As my wife and daughter were keen to visit Dunelm in Grantham this afternoon, I politely declined and headed for Kenilworth Road to check out any visiting Waxwings.

Arriving just after 3.00pm, I was delighted when, after only a short wait, 34 Waxwings flew in at 3.20. They perched in 2 trees (one a Silver Birch) by the Residents' Car Park opposite Hebden Walk. The birds made several raids on the Cotoneaster nearest to the road. A local birder, Alan Roberts, arrived and was pleased to digiscope the Waxwings. At c 3.55 most of the flock flew to the tall tree by the School zebra-crossing and were soon feeding on the 2 Cotoneasters there -on Harrowby Lane and 30 seconds' walk away from Hebden Walk....as enjoyed by another local birder who turned up - David Tilford.

At c 4.10 the flock flew to the tall tree by Hebden Walk and fed again there on the berry tree nearest the road. At 4.25 they all took off and headed away in the direction of Harrowby Village. So, after yesterday's Grantham Dip, I was able to enjoy the Waxwing flock today continuously for over an hour.....a record for me as so often flocks fly in and then fly off after quite short visits. :D

Plus -
2 Buzzards circling high over Kenilworth Road (c 3.15)
Barn Owl over A46 near the Collingham turnoff (c 9.35pm).

Having seen the 50 - 60 fly-over Waxwing flock in Lincoln this morning (Sat),( see Andy Sims post " Waxwings 26/3 "), and having had my appetite whetted for a 'feeding frenzy' - not to be indulged in by me but by Waxwings - I headed this afternoon for the nearest (semi) reliable Waxwing stakeout : Kenilworth Road, Grantham.

I arrived at 2.30pm and parked, carefully, in the Residents' Car Park opposite Hebden Walk, on a dull, chilly and windy afternoon. At c 2.50, 39 (I counted them 3 times to try and make 40 ! )Waxwings flew into their favoured tree by Hebden Walk.....just as ( according to Murphy's Law ) no fewer than 4 large dogs were being slowly walked below their perching tree. To their credit, the Waxwings stayed put on the branches swaying in the wind. For whatever reason, however, they took off after 5 or 6 minutes without attempting to feed and disappeared over the Estate towards Harrowby.

I stayed around until 4.00pm and although a large Starling flock and a few smaller groups plus a flock of feral Pigeons flew over, the Waxwings presumably fed elsewhere in the local area. So, although I saw the 39 strong perched flock for some 5 minutes, I never did see a 'feeding frenzy' this afternoon.

However, after yesterday's disappointment in Louth, I have more than made up for it today totalling some 100 Waxwings in all, what with the 50 -60 fly-over flock in Lincoln this morning and then the c 40 Waxwings in Grantham this afternoon. A cynic might say, " If you spend most of your free time chasing after bleedin' Waxwings, then you ruddy well should see a few now and then." Anyway, today's sightings certainly make up for the 40 (documented) disappointing Waxwing Trip 'Dips' I've had (so far) this winter.....but with 34 'Successes'....including today :D :D ....= 74 specifically targeted Waxwing Trips in all.

Regards,

Freddy

Freddy, your ongoing input to this Waxwing irruption has surely enhanced an appalling winter, and I'm sure all on the forum will second this.

Thanks, Richard, for your encouraging post. My Waxwing project this winter seems to have gathered a special momentum all of its own. The only cloud on the horizon, of course, is the inevitable return of the birds to Scandinavia and Russia in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, let's hope they continue to turn up here and there in Lincolnshire so that one can enjoy them for just a bit longer.

Waxwing numbers are likely to decrease over the next month as the birds do start to depart Lincolnshire. Please can I remind all LBC Forum members, that all the Waxwing records uploaded to the forum are added to the LBC Database.

Therefore please keep reporting all Waxwing sightings, so we get a full set of data on birds as the numbers start to drop off.

Thanks’ to a number of observers (and especially Freddy!! =D> ) we have a very accurate picture of the 2010/11 waxwing invasion in Lincolnshire! Something that may not happen again for sometime?

Hopefully, there will be a full write-up in the 2010 and/or the 2011 LBC report.

Thanks

Andrew

Glad your local patch Waxwings are still around, Steve.

Birders often visit 'regular' Waxwing stakeouts on and off throughout the day, but frequently miss out. For the Hebden Walk - Kenilworth Road - Harrowby Lane one (all of a 30-second walk from the 1st site to the last and all intervisible [...well, the important perching trees are ] from the Residents' Car Park ), it looks as if the period 2.50 to 3.50pm is prime time (although not guaranteed, of course) :

Tue 15 Mar...3.50...(22)...Bob Wacey
Wed 16 Mar...3.00...(19)...FJ
Fri 18 Mar...3.30...(16)....Steve Nesbitt
Tue 22 Mar...3.20...(34)...FJ
Sat 26 Mar...2.50...(39)...FJ
Tue 29 Mar...3.05...(22)...Steve Nesbitt.
(Totals at the site have varied between 12 and 70+.)
