Having checked the Sunday weather forecast, I arrived at Riverslea Pit/Lake, Kirkby-on-Bain soon after 4.00pm today (Sat), just as some birders were leaving (before I got to talk to them). Except for one short, sharp hail shower, the weather remained bright and sunny for my visit, with little noticeable wind.
I 'scoped the RNGrebe in the quarter of the Pit nearest to the Causeway (the wide, level grassy track opposite the Tip entrance), initially from the roadside hedge gaps and then from the Causeway itself. It spent a lot of time preening and dozing but by 5.00pm it had drifted close to the Causeway and started fishing (quite successfully) near the reedbeds there. By 5.15, it had started preening and dozing again but still not far from the Causeway.
A 'good' bird to see and 'scope close to ; thanks, Trevor, for the lead info.
Also :
- a handsome drake Goldeneye
- at least 4 GCGrebes, flashing their shiny pink bills which, as they came close to the RNGrebe, allowed size and bill comparisons/contrasts.
- Buzzard flew over.
On my way back to BBH, I thought I was in luck again with PFGeese when a flock of 50-60 birds flew across the road in the distance near Metheringham. However, getting closer, and as they tumbled down to land in a roadside field, they turned out to be......Lapwings. Still, these days in Lincs you don't get to see a flock of 50-60 Lapwings every day.
