Jay 1 My first ever record in the garden although not a surprising statistic as we are in a large swathe of arable fenland with few trees. Fortunately the attempt to take young Blackbirds out of a nest was foiled by characteristic alarm rattles and much startled short distant flights by others in the vicinity. Well done Blackies!
On Saturday and Sunday our neighbouring field was visited in late evening by a Barn Owl. The orange-buff upper parts looked finely mottled and spotted with grey and white and my own records over the years suggest that this bird may well be a female. Barn Owl records locally seem to be near to the outfall of the Hobhole Drain. Nest boxes here have not as yet been reinstated whilst channel deepening work continues and the newly formed slurry lagoons dry out.
Finally on Saturday during the late morning a Hobby seen from the train between Seacroft and Havenhouse station.
