I accessed Swanholme from Doddington Road by the level crossing today (with parking in nearby Swanholme Close), arriving late morning. The first Swanholme lake you come to (on your left) is Coot Lake - the 'dogleg' lake - and I joined it at the 'Coot Minor' end with the lake then doglegging further away left towards the Coot Major end by the Swanholme main entrance from Hartsholme.
The Goosanders were still showing well, split into two distinct groups and certainly numbering into the middle 20s and above, and with drakes outnumbering the females. It is always difficult to get an exact number with their continual diving but Chris' 32 could well still be present.
Thanks, Chris, for the info.
Also good numbers of Gadwall on Coot Lake (20+ pairs) and Wigeon (25+ pairs).
If it helps for future reference :
the large lake in a direct line from the Coot Minor to Coot Major ends (ie.in the dogleg open space) is Sanctuary Lake with the smaller, narrow lake alongside it being Tadpole Lake. The 4th of Swanholme's 4 lakes is Dragonfly Lake between Sanctuary Lake and the Black Bridge.
Here endeth the first lesson.
