Spent the morning wader and sea watching on the foreshore at Rimac. After lunch I walked upto 'Coastgaurds cottages' (Churchhill lane) and then back along the edge of the marsh. As i got to the Rimac viewing platform. I noted a distant 'Large raptor' sp. with my naked eye flying low down in/off the sea. Almost as soon as I got on the bird with my binoculars, it opened it's wings and hesitantly dropped down into the marsh.
With the limited view and at some distance I could not define plumage detail, only size, shape and colour shade. It was 'Kite' sized but with a much broader wing and looked all dark above and below. I immediately went to the car park for my scope and spent the next hour and a half or so, on the viewing platform watching the marshes. Unfortunately the bird did not re-appear. I informed Roy Harvey and several other birders going out for the Buff-breasts to keep an eye out for the raptor.
If i was a betting man i would not put money on it... If pressed i would say Eagle sp.
NB: I am going to Sussex for the Long-toed Stint tomorrow, or I would be back at Rimac for sure.
