I had a dental appointment in Lincoln today at 2.00pm and, wanting to combine that business with potential pleasure, I left home early so as to follow up Terry and Eileen Corlett's report of some 54 Waxwings opposite the UPS Depot on Deacon Road on Monday 21 March.
I initially drove past Bishops Road and Proctors Road so as to check ( for the umpteenth time ) the berry-laden Cotoneaster just on the corner there which for some reason or other seems to have had its berry crop left virtually left untouched this winter from the ravages of feeding Waxwings. There was nothing to report and nothing to report opposite the UPS Depot - where I sat in the car from 1.00 - 1.30ish.
After the Dentist (ouch!), I thought : " faint heart ne'er won fair Waxwing", and returned at c 2.30 to the Bishops Road/Proctor Road corner.......and no less than 50 Waxwings were perched in the 3 or 4 non-berry trees there. They made one feeding foray to the afore-mentioned Cotoneaster during my brief visit and returned to their perching trees. I could only stay until 2.45 as the memsahib urgently wanted the car herself for business/pleasure purposes in Lincoln.
So, the great news is that possibly/probably some of the original Waxwing flock of 75 which I first located opposite the UPS Depot on 27 Jan, are the very ones which Terry and Eileen saw on 21 March at the same site and now those I saw today, are still around the area (never having left it) or have returned from wherever.
