Our first visit to Manby Flashes since the installation of the new hide, produced a Gt White Egret in reeds on the far side of the water around 11.50. Flushed by a dog walker, it landed on the top of a tree where it gave great views for some time, before relocating to a ditch further north. It finally flew off north around 12.30.

Thanks for the call Geoff and Julia. The bird had flown into the ditch to the east of the flashes where i managed to get a poor record shot or two. This is what I saw:

A large all white egret similar in size to a Grey Heron (there was one not far away) but with a longer neck which appeared almost kinked. It had a large all yellow bill and long legs, with pale tibia, projecting well beyond the tail in flight and blackish feet. It flew further east more or less following the Long Eau and was lost to sight. These features can be seen in these shots

Near Muckton I saw at least 13 Buzzards over Muckton, Legbourne and Burwell Woods

We called at Manby on our way back from Gib. Point.
No sign of the GWE at 3.30 p.m. but 23 Whooper Swans on the water at Manby.
We then checked Levee Doors but again no sign of the GWE there.

At Gib Point, seven Crosssbills in trees by the north car park.
John Shaugnessy commented that a couple of birders saw a Great White Egret fly into the Gib Point reserve early afternoon.
There is a possibility that this could have been the Manby bird?

The view of the bird on top of the tree, brilliant white against a blue sky, was stunning – and the 'take everywhere' camera I bought for such an occasion was left at home!

I must not forget camera

I must not...
