Chris

All presumably at Whisby NP!

Any chance of a few more details re the Hen Harrier? Where was it seen, direction of flight etc etc.
Hope Neil got some photos!

Regards

Grahame

Yes it was Whisby.

Neil had gone by then missing both the stars. The Med Gull was there when I arrived about 9 but then went missing for a couple of hours. Paul and I were in the new hide to get out of the wind when it reappeared again about 11:30. When we noticed the harrier it looked as though it was over the old oakwood but perhaps further back than that. The white band was very distinctive but the bird was very rufous on the upper wings. It was circularing for some time in that area - almost buzzard like

Not sure that I have ever seen any harrier at Whisby before

Okay, thanks Chris.

Just one thing, your description sounds a bit like a Harris's Hawk! I'm only mentioning this as the last 'Hen Harrier' at Whisby turned out to be one of these escaped falconers birds. Have a look at a few photos on the net and see what you think.

Cheers

Grahame

Hi Grahame

I have had a look at Harris Hawk images and I must admit that it certainly looks that you have hit the nail firmly on the head

Paul and I were a bit concerned when we saw the bird just by the way it flew (circularing) and really where it was flying (hardly typical).

We did look for jesses but could see any and we had a good look in the book at the likely culprits byt needless to say Harris Hawk wasn't displayed

I am happy to withdraw it and hopefully Paul will agree but the Med Gull was nice!

I had a dark Common Buzzard with a white upper rump fly over Boultham mere at about 11:00 this morning heading in the direction of Whisby, could this have been the bird you saw?

Met a chap from Wiltshire at Whisby this morning. He had taken pictures of this bird. Looking at pictures of Harris Hawk his pictures seem to confirm this is what it was. Grahame was hoping to see him on the reserve.

All

Can now confirm that the bird in question was a Harris's Hawk after looking at photos of the bird this afternoon. Mystery solved!

Cheers

Grahame
