On my doorstep I had a my annual walk round Swanholme lakes. There were tree felling operations going on. It was a scene of devastation with trees uprooted and debris and fires all over. Surprisingly enough there was still a fair selection of birds to see - although nothing out of the ordinary

great spotted woodpecker
redwing
common gull and a few wigeon, gadwall & tufted duck

no goosander

Hopefully the site will see the benefit of the works later in the year

The trouble is with this kind of 'improvement' the hollow trees and branches are 'cleaned out' and suddenly you find there are no more tawny owls or whatever you have there. I think there should be LEGISLATION that such actions must be followed by the introduction of suitable nest boxes placed where today's 'yoof' can't get at them.
