I was out tonight until 8.30 pm looking for roding Woodcock at Legbourne Wood without success. I'm not sure if there are actually any there but I thought I'd give it a try. I just wondered if anyone else has had any anywhere else in Lincs so far this year. If so where, when and what time?

I have to confess its a long time since I actually had a roding Woodcock in Lincs especially in the Louth area though I've seen them roding in Scotland in early April in the last couple of years. Anyone got any idea what their breeding status is in Lincs these days?

Hi Phil,

The woods in the Bourne area usually hold a few roding woodcock. I have'nt checked any of them out this year but there is usually upwards of a pair each in most of the woods in the area.

Best regards,

Ian

Hi Phil

There was a national survey a few years ago - I think the BTO organised it - worth looking into - I know some Lincs sites were covered.

Ed can probably give you some info

Chambers Wood had a good 2 to 3 last spring roding. 1 over the car in the car park as I was leaving!

Hi Phil,
I took part in the BTO Survey about 6 years ago in the Market Rasen area. There were and still are plenty of roding Woodcock to be found, particularly on the edge of the many clear fell areas of Willingham Forest. Linwood Warren is another good area. Just to check, last night I went to Market Rasen Golf Course where it borders Warren Wood (TF135884) and saw/heard a definite two in five minutes!

Thanks very much for all that info. I gather the 2003 survey was done in May June but Stuart's experience last night shows they are roding already. What time was your visit Stuart? Curiously the 1991 atlas shows no birds at all in the Market Rasen / Bardney area which seems strange.

I'm particularly interested in the position on the eastern side of the wolds. In the past they've bred from Louth down to the Willoughby area so I'll keep looking and I'll be out more later this week. If anyone has any gen from this area please let me know.

Phil,

I took part in the 2003 survey and covered Willoughby Top Wood and the end of Well Woods just down from Ulceby Cross. No Woodcock were recorded on any of the visits.
20 years ago they were regular in Welton and Willoughby Woods.
Several roding in Ostlers Plantation June 2007.

Cheers Ed

It will be interesting to see if we can find any roding Woodcock at all to the east of the wolds this spring.

In the 1991 atlas the Lincs Woodcock stronghold was in the NW of the county. Are you chaps up there still seeing them?

Phil
