The Lincolnshire Bird Club

Had intended going to Cleggy for the RNG but read it had gone, then was going to see the PS [lifer] found by CA who kindly gave me the exact location, in the end came to one of my favourites.

Arrived at 11.45 while it was sunny and left at 16.15 while it was chucking it down. Quite a few people there towards end of afternoon but when I arrived only one.

First of all the Buzz. I did tell two guys I know about fifteen minutes before I left about it. I was parked near the small copse/old farm and was hoping to get in some practice with the camcorder. The bird came over the trees and then towards me as it circled and then I tried getting it in focus, these tiny cams are not as easy to use as their forefathers which I had in the late 1970s, obviously a tripod is a must. At one time the bird was circling close to the car on the underneath side it had the usual C Buzz markings but what stood it apart was the white on it's rear end it was easy to see as it flew round and round. Of course I hadn't brought my field guide but had my dictaphone so put details on there. Suffice to say I got no photographic record of the bird!

Just read on Birdguides that a Rough-legged Buzz was seen in Saxby-All-Saints on the 15th, the day after I saw what I thought was one, the village is next door to Worlaby as most of us know.

I'd like to know who saw it and kept it from LBC forum, got an idea who it was
It's always good to get a lifer!

Regarding the record of Rough-legged Buzzard in the Worlaby area earlier in the week,
none of the local birders saw it nor know who reported it.
Subsequent checks of the area have produced only Common Buzzard sightings.

I saw four buzzards there today all common. One was being mobbed by a peregrine

5 whooper swan and 39 mute on the far side of the railway line. All flew off to the other side of the river but the Mutes eventually returned. 2 dead swans by the river both hitting the power cables by the looks of it

Also a sparrowhawk and a couple of kestrels
Skylarks singing also

Do you have a red Golf, saw a guy walking back from the Pipe Bridge while I was parked at rail crossing around about 1330?

I only saw one Common Buzz today, so does that mean I didn't see what I believe to be a RLB on Sunday? Considering how close it was, maybe it was a Goshawk and I was mistaken

That was me Max. Not my car - an insurance job - someone ran into the back of me last Friday. I think you were chomping on your sandwiches. I saw my buzzards and said buzzards to myself and left it at that. Then I got home and saw your post and started wondering but still think buzzard

Its a shame i didn't realise it was you - I could have shared your sandwiches and told you what I had seen

Hello Roy,

When you refer to the local birders I assume you mean Mr Catley and his merry men

Just because they didn't see it proves nothing. None of the local birders saw the Albatross when it stopped off next door to MSQ but we all know it was there, oh of course one of the anglers took a photo of it and it was shown on our forum. I wonder if that photo hadn't been taken would the local birders have believed an Albatross had been there, I doubt it

If Max has been the first local birder to see a RLB this winter at one of his favourite sites [Worlaby] it would certainly be a feather in his well worn cap especially getting one up on you-know-who etc

Finally, if I'd had a big bertha camera and lens [ mind you I'd never lift it off the ground without help from a mobile crane ] I could have got some evidence and proved one way or the other what the bird was, but I hadn't. Let's hope I'll soon be proficient with the camcorder

roy i know you were looking for the black brant at cleethorpes a few weeks ago just to let you know it was sighted again at the rear of the leisure center fri afternoon after high tide by colin howard a rspb member but not lbc member. he is a decent birder who can be relied on and he has seen it 3/4 times since the new year. if not at the leisure ctr it gets on the fields inside the seawall or to the rear of the yacht club. hope this helps
