Post subject:  Bird feeder conundrum

Is anyone using one of the new RSPB Ultimate Easy-clean seed feeders?
Like many of you I have been feeding in my garden for some years. My set-up is, and has been for some time, 4 feeders on a central pole. I use a Gardman Giant Flip top seed feeder (with twelve ports) for sunflower hearts, a small nyjer feeder and 2x RSPB Classic seed feeders (the large one with six ports) for mixed wild bird seed. This has been successful and supports good numbers of all the usual species including between 30 and 40 House Sparrow. The largest specie by number.
The feeders are placed in close proximity to a hedge giving easy access to cover.
One of my seed feeders was getting 'tired' so I asked Santa for a replacement. The new Easy-clean model is almost the same as its predecessor except that it is a couple of inches shorter and the perches are broad and flat as opposed to the older version being cylindrical.
I top up the seed feeders every day BUT in the 3 weeks that the new feeder has been in place only a couple of inches has been used from it.
The Sparrows queue up in numbers waiting for a gap on the older model but ignore the new one. I have seen one Blue Tit and one House Sparrow use it but that is all. Previous changes of feeders have taken a day or two to get used to but nothing like this amount of time.
I have sent a note to the RSPB asking their views but as yet have received no reply.
Any thoughts, suggestions or advice?
