Brian Matthews' "Sound of the Sixties" this morning featured Jimmy Rogers' 1962 single "In an English Country Garden". For the first time I listened to the lyrics carefully and was astonished to find that this particular English country garden contained Bobolink, Tanager and Cardinal! I would love to know whereabouts in England was this particular garden and whether the report was accepted by the RBBP?

That's only the half of it. I've checked the most popular lyrics for this tune on the Web. Apparently, we should also look out for fireflies, quail and bluebird in our English country gardens!

As the song was obviously written by a North American (not Jimmie Rodgers who only did the arrangement) did you not consider that the composer of the song might have been alluding to New England. The birds he refers to would, I am sure, regularly occur in that American state. Presumably he dropped New in the song to keep the number of words in the bar correct!
