I wholly endorse your comments, Terry. Both Martin and Tormod have a refreshing approach to bird watching and Tormods efforts in Varanger to persuade the locals the potential of actively encouraging birders to the area were eventually rewarded. I liked the quote (possibly mis-quoted by me!) "If you enjoy your bird watching you're a good birder - if you really enjoy your bird watching you're a really good birder." Could it become the Forums motto??

Stuart,

They are two good lengthy soundbites but, if adopted as you suggest, they would inevitably lead to misunderstandings.
For better or for worse, to most birders ' a good birder ' has the connotation of skill. The soundbites have the connotation of enjoyment and skill may well be absent.
The soundbites are certainly acceptable in a philosophical context but not in the birding world as it is.

Freddy

I think I know what you mean Freddy, but who are we to judge others skill level? I like the philosophical approach.
