The Osprey is a magnificent bird of prey and one birders in lincolnshire will on route to breeding grounds in spring and on route to Africa in autumn. But why cant we enjoy the spectical all summer long? I havent though about this too much but today I thought why don't Ospreys breed in Lincolnshire? Just like at Rutland? Lincolnshire has plenty of water body's and some lrge ones at that. I'm not too sure what a Ospreys would need in an environment to breed. But does Lincolnshire not have the foundations? Personally I would love to be able to see Ospreys breed in lincolnshire, obviousl it would need alot of time and effort. the site I would pick for a breeding location would be Alkborough flats. My main worry would be other other birds of prey there are plenty of marsh harriers in north lincolnshire and also Blacktoft. It would be nice to see what other members think of this. But this needs to be kept as a debate and not an arguement |

Have often thought the same thing, in fact talked about it at Rutland Water while Osprey watching with one of the wardens. see my report in non lincs birding. He explained you need very keen and dedicated people, who could get plenty of help and advice from the trust at Rutland Water. on telling him about returning Ospreys at places like Black Bank, he said they are always looking for new nesting sites so in his opinion the first action would be to build artificial nests to tempt them, but he warned it could well be a very slow process. Anuway hope this helps in starting a debate, Cheers, Mike Surr |

I feel that if this were to go anywhere it would need to be a propper discussion not just something over the internet, something were quite alot of lincs birders come together and talk about the pros and cons and a suitable site if there is one? Bu not just yet. After that we would have to try and get local farmers on board and then from that we would have to evaluate fish stock in the area and the impact that the possible introduction would have on the wildlife already in place. Lots of other little steps would have to be taken. Then just maybe a nesting platform could go up!! But sadly looking at the response that seems hihghly unlikely at the minute. C'mon lincs birders get involved in this topic you all must have an opinion on this subject express it!!! Some people may think it is crazy an will never happen, well nobody is saying it will just proping at the subject. |

With due respect, Anthony, an open Forum is not the place to discuss the potential for nesting Schedule 1 species! |

I do understand that and that may be a main reason why people aren't commenting on this thread but what I am trying to achieve from this topic is if any lincs birders do want to get together and have a chat about ospreys in Lincolnshire. I did mention this in my previous post, the idea of a group of people coming together and talking about this in person and getting advice from other who have succeded at this may appeal to more people. This is just a topic to try get lincs birders talking about it. I'm not saying we are going to go through with this any time soon i'm not even saying this could happen chances are it won't. I just want others to bare in mind that Lincolnshire does have the the potential to make this happen. |
