My son, Alex, who has accompanied me many times on bird and butterfly trips in the UK and abroad over the years, telephoned me this afternoon from his ship off the Yemeni coast in the Red Sea after his watch had finished. (he pays $21 for a 20 minute telephone allowance).

As a Maritime Security Officer his main job, of course. is keeping an eye out for those pesky pirates but he also welcomes 'Natural History moments'. He mentioned that recently some exhausted Barn Swallows landed on the ship and he was able to rescue a couple from the prowling ship's cat and nestle them for a moment in his hands......as he added, it was an unexpected opportunity to get his hands on a couple of birds after a few weeks ar sea. :D :)
