Just driving between Heighington and Canwick and there were between 500 and 1000 Wood Pigeons together on the overhead cables. Is this something unusual, as I have seen Starlings and swallows flocking like this but not Wood Pigeons?

Hi Andrew, I have only ever seen pigeons flock to feed about 1000 in the field next to bradly woods sometime last year. But I have never seen them on wire's together.

It is quite a common occurrence to see large flocks of Wood Pigeons on wires if the wires are adjacent to a suitable food source ie rape fields in spring.

Thanks for the replies, it is the first time I've noticed Wood Pigeons flocking on wires, mind I suppose I may not have been looking so intently in the past.

I suppose they were close to open fields, as the road I was on is farm land, I just hope the locals still had power as the wires were sagging quite a bit!!!
