A friend has asked for information about budget scopes. Can anybody recommend a decent one please |

It is difficult to know what you mean by budget, the prices range from well over £2k to well under £100. Also what sort of portability is required, whether it is to be used on a heavy duty tripod or perhaps a monopod, whether a high mag is required for e.g. sea watching or or is it for just down on the local pond. After a lot of researching the market I have purchased an Opticron GS 52 ED which has a 12x-36x HD eyepiece, is extremely lightweight, portable, rubber armoured, nitrogen purged, 30 yr warranty and it cost just £389. The optical quality is excellent and is as good as the Kowa TSN 4 that I sold a while ago because it was too heavy and cumbersome for my needs (not a scientific assessment!). David |

The Hawke naturetrek ED 65 is fairly light at 1kg and with ED optics and a 16 to 48 zoom very good value at c 300£. Cley Spy stock them regards John. |
