Currently on bbc2 good documentary on the efforts to return the marsh areas back to southern Iraq. Good footage of local avifauna.

Well worth viewing if available on iplayer. Good footage of basra reed warbler and difficulties in filming within a still unstable country. However post Saddam the marshlands are slowly being restored.

It was an excellent film,with good flocks of Marbled Teal reported.
I noted that the Italians were investing a lot of money in the marshes. I hope they don't intend to make it into their new hunting area ( I believe Egypt is one of their favorite destinations at the moment).
The Iraqi plan seems to be to create a tourist haven, although how the local marsh arabs will feel about that will be interesting.

Great programme John,watched it yesterday,although i wouldn't fancy birding there,I.E.D's and armed escorts,i'll give it a miss i think,although a ride in a Blackhawk would be fun!.
