Let's not let yet another healthy discussion on bird i.d. develop into a slagging match! GPC has a proven record through his time on the BRC and Dean is a handy photographer. Let's all try to work together on this excellent Forum.

Unfortunately most sensible / potential in depth threads on this and other forums soon degenerate as people who have nothing of interest to add but seem solely bent on self-promotion take over the content; this is the reason that most excellent birders are so reluctant to take part in internet discussions on bird identification and this reduces the value of the medium. Its a shame but seems inevitable in the modern bird related scene.
And I am not sure when presenting references and generating discussion was elitist but that is maybe my lack of humour again.
For the time being I will just stick to birding.

graham i sincerely hope you carry on with your excellent informative and information packed postings which not only show the passion you have for birding but make excellent reading and mostly induce a hell of a lot of thinking with people diving for reference books. your passion sometimes shows in a negative way with not understanding why mere mortals like myself have not got the same skills and information retentive memory as yourself and shows in the odd caustic comment that can upset people of a sensitive nature. that and your perhaps self admitted lack of humour in a subject you feel so passionate about. i have the same passion but not your skills and ability, i for one would miss your postings and ability enormously. i hope i have not put anything here that offends you in anyway i only like stuart hope we can all get on but perhaps just a little more lightheartedly sometimes, banter is great but not personal stuff, SO SMILE AND BIG HUGS TO ALL :) :) :)
keep up the excellent work graham :) :) :)

We now risk the strong possibility of being teletransported to Lincs Bird Chat....but so be it.

I think it's a fact of life in 2011 in almost all areas of discussion, unless it be in a purely academic environment, even including of death, that an element of light-hearted comment and even banter have now crept in. Gone for good are the days of the monopoly of unbroken sessions of deep furrowed brows and well-measured serious phrases in discussion, either oral or written. Whether it's a move in the wrong direction is in itself open to debate, of course.

I think it may all stem from the fact that people who may wish to relieve the utter seriousness of a topic or who may not have the depth of real knowledge of a subject still want to contribute something and they then slant their comments in a less than serious way. That approach is not going to go away and, eg. unlike in Germany, is now embedded in our culture.

I agree that it is quite frustrating and not at all easy for some who care passionately and seriously about a subject to accept these intrusive light-hearted asides but when all is said and done, it's now clearly an established evolutionary social and cultural development.....and we all know what Darwin said about not adapting to new environmental changes. Perhaps the best answer for some is to completely ignore the comment and then to hammer home one's own view with total conviction.
