Does anybody have any idea of what birding sites there are in and around Birmingham? I am going to be spending the next year there, as I'm going to uni.

Hi Alistair,
It depends on what sort of transport you have as public transport limits you somewhat, but my favourite sites are Upton Warren,Worcs.
Tame Valley (RSPB Middleton Lakes/Kingsbury Water Park) and Blithfield Res. Staffs and Wyre Forest Worcs. should keep you busy!

try edgbaston resevoir, just off the hagley road and on main bus routes, its only about ten minutes from the city centre its not the best place in the world but should be good enough to keep you fairly sane. you could also try rspb sandwell valley, always worth a walk round and turns up some decent sightings considering its right by a motorway and unfortunately the west brom ground, being a wolves man myself i always get vaccinated before i go round sandwell valley!
if you can afford it join the west mids bird club its well worth it.

One site I refrained from mentioning was Sheepwash Urban Park,Tipton my local patch for over 25 years. It's within walking distance of Dudley Port railway station. Has a list of over 180 species including Dusky Warbler, Pomarine Skua, Night Heron and Grey Phalarope but can be boring.
I always preferred it to Sandwell Valley, see what you can find.
