Despite the poor weather, numerous damselflies were found sheltering amongst the vegetation surrounding the car park at Kirkby Gravel Pits this morning. These consisted of mainly Azure and Blue-tailed, but also surprisingly two Red-eyed Damselflies. Does anyone know if this species has been recorded at this site before?

Nearby at Kirkby Moor during a brief glimpse of sunshine, many more damselfies were seen in a sheltered woodland ride and these included,
Large Red, Azure, Blue-tailed and a few Common Blue.

Regards

Dave Wright, Steve Routledge and Chris Atkin

Red-eyed damselflies have been known from the Kirkby reserve area from at least the mid-1990's when I was the voluntary reserve manager there. They particularly liked resting on the floating algal mats in front of the hide.
