World’s best wildlife photography comes to Grimsby

The finest wildlife images from around the world will come to the Fishing Heritage Centre and Cleethorpes Discovery Centre this month.

Over 80 images from the 2008 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition, which attracted a record 32,351 entries, will provide a
visual feast for visitors at both attractions from Saturday, January 17 to Sunday, April 5.

Grimsby and Cleethorpes will be one of the many towns and cities it will visit as part of its international tour.

The exhibition includes all the winning, runner-up and commended photographs from the competition’s 17 categories which is open to amateur
and professional photographers.

Councillor Steve Hocknell, portfolio holder for culture, leisure and healthier communities, said: "I am very excited about this exhibition
which is regarded as the international leader in the artistic account of the natural world and we are very privileged to be able to show this
exhibition in Grimsby.

"It exhibits the best of these visually stunning, sometimes humorous and often thought-provoking images - a rare opportunity to view the very best
of the world’s wildlife right on your doorstep."

This year’s overall winners, Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year, are American photographer Steve Winter
and Hampshire teenager Catriona Parfitt.

Chair of the judging panel, Mark Carwardine, said: "The judges spend weeks in a darkened room, looking at thousands of beautiful images, but the
final exhibition photographs have a creativity, originality and sheer drama that set them apart.

"The competition plays an increasingly crucial role in raising the profile of wildlife photography and generating awareness of conservation. Nothing
speaks louder than an evocative photograph that stirs the imagination, tugs at the heart strings and engages the mind."

The Cleethorpes Discovery Centres will exhibit images from the Young Wildlife Photographer category and the Gerald Durrell award for endangered
wildlife. This will be free to view in the community gallery.

The Fishing Heritage Centre will exhibit all the adult entries together with the two overall winners in the Muriel Barker Gallery. Admission
charges apply to this exhibition. Entry costs £6 for adults, £4 for concessions, and £2 for children, with family tickets available at £12 for
two adults and up to five children.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is owned by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine.

Photographers can enter next year’s competition online from January 19 until late March 2009. For more details and to enter online visit
