Hi Katherine, would just like to say don't get too down hearted about making mistakes,it is all part of the learning process, and seperating Common and Ring-billed Gulls are baffling even to some experts,so keep enjoying your hobby, you have plenty of enthusiasm, and just go out there and prove everyone wrong by finding something really good, that we can all come and see. :D

Regards

Steve

"Probably the best way for you to make notes would be with a Dictaphone"

Nick's suggestion is a good one, and I must remember to take mine with me! When I do remember, it is a useful aid to identification, as it can also record any songs/calls of birds that are close by. I have an Olympus recorder that cost about £30 a few years ago (it was bought for another purpose) and in the absence of a more experienced birder, it gives me the chance to listen to my observations at a later date, and to let others offer their comments.

Cheers
Geoff

hi, Im not sure where this thread is going, the best way for kath would be maybe a dictaphone, but to get acceptance of any mega rare bird is photographic evidence, via camcorder or digital or even like me the 35mm camera.

Not true Rog. Sibe Blue Robin at Minsmere was not photographed, most Crag Martins have not been photographed. I could go on, but the important point is to do a true and honest description. If this identifies the species and rules out all others, it will be accepted. If it doesn't fulfil these criteria, it wont. Simple really. I should know, as i've had records rejected by BBRC myself. I learnt from it and moved on.

my mistaken view then,.............i think to be honest our description of our bbrc submission was not detailed enough, the macmillan guide to identification said do not overdo the description as the bbrc will see throu that so me and dave j,went a little too much under i think,as you say move on,your quite right, and thanks for putting me right on crag martins etc etc.

I've used a bog standard dictaphone for about six years and it cost £14, and wouldn't be without it.
