Dear all for those that can remember my postings last year on the cutting of vegetation that contained orchids ( 54 bee orchids ) i want to inform all interested parties of updates with anglian water about covenham. I have been in contact with the conservation officer Mike Drew since then and they have agreed to revise the maintenance schedule of the site and defer grass cutting till the middle of July. 26 bee orchids were counted by myself this year in the same area. Anyway that is just general info, because off several outstanding areas off concern Mike Drew has asked if he can meet all persons with an interest in Covenham on site sometime early September. He asked particuly to meet with members of the Lincs Bird Club and also any group that has a concern, i understand there is a butterfly issue as well so now is the chance to put your cases to him about sensitive areas at Covenham. I have only lived in the area 18 months and need people who have site history to be involved, i am only a point off contact and have only got this far because i would not let the matter of the Orchids drop. I understand there could be proposals to possibly move the birdwatching area ( water skiers ) and this whole meeting could just be a cosmetic exercise on the need to consult, but if nobody takes sufficient interest it is no use moaning retrograde. It seems he wants to talk genuinally with all interested parties so do not let this oppertunity slip by. Can anyone whom is willing to come along please let me know, as soon as i get a firm date and time for the meeting i will add to this posting and update with any further info. Hi Terry, Linda & I would certainly be interested in coming along to the meeting. In terms of 'site history' there would be few better qualified people than Keith Robinson, but he would need to be contacted by 'phone as he has no computer. Well done for opening up the communications channel. Roy. |

I have e-mailed Terence to say I would like to attend if I'm in Lincs that week. I would like to see the bird hide reinstated or failing that a place for a bird log would be useful. Anybody got any thoughts about the best area for the bird reserve? Most of the ducks still seem to favour the SE corner but I believe the bird area has been moved to the water tower end. Geoff |

Geoff and all i am extremely pleased with the rapid response so far. The moving of the reserve is a subject for discussion but i do not know if it has happened yet and who knows just what might come from these talks. I hope that someone the butterfly and fauna sections of the club wll also raise a head over the parapet to give an alround conservation aspect. When Mike broached the subject of the reserve all i said was you can call anywhere a reserve but unless the birds like the habitat provided it means nothing. My view is that the birds gather in that area to shelter from the prevailing winds which tend to be either sth west or nth east and that is where the shelter is. It might be the whole status of the res changes but i think patiance will be required, bite size chunks only, slowly slowly catchee monkey as the saying goes and as i said previously i will keep all informed on dates times etc. watch this space Terry Whalin |

The Lincs Wildlife Trust would be able to attend if required, as we have quite a chequered history with the place. Would you contact me with any meeting details please, if LBC members are happy with us being involved again. |

Hi Terry I'd like to attend the meeting and express my views on Covenham, with regards to butterfly conservation. It's one of the few sites in Lincolnshire, away from the coast, for Green Hairstreak. In the past I've contacted the Trust and Anglian Water in an attempt to manage the north embankment and the area around the yacht club more sympathetically, but my pleas have always fallen on deaf ears. The over-grazing by sheep is a major problem. Regards Dave |

Dear all i have been very pleased with the response to my plea and just to give everyone an update i have today given mike drew another prod and he informs me that he is awaiting a response from the site manager as to a convenient date. He says he is also very pleased at the response that has covered most areas of conservation and has promised to give approx 2 wks notice of the meeting still scheduled for early to mid september. I will phone him again in a further 2 wks and hopefully have a date and time by then so pass on the info enclosed here to anyone you know is an iterested party. I see that anglian Water have put a sign up This area of grassland is being managed to benefit Wildflowers in line with our Biodiversity action plan anglianWater But you would never guess as it is in the wrong place, about 100mm from the site the Orchards grow  I think it would have been a good idea to ask someone where these grow, me think ? Dean have not seen the sign so it is very recent also there are several areas where orchids are and several species but even so it perhaps is a sign of a more sensitive policy and a different awareness for the future. We can only hope they are taking the concerns raised by various people a little more seriously as expressed by the wish for a meeting with interested parties, but we shall see. take care dean and do not get plastered,  Terry Whalin |

Dear all i have this morning been in contact with Mike Drew of Anglia Water and he has confirmed a date and time for the meeting. The details are as follows Monday 15th september at 10.00 hrs at the yacht club can you please confirm to me whom will attend. I will try to contact people whom have expressed a wish to attend individually via phone or e mail starting next wk because i am now away at my daughters untill Friday. I have told mike about 8 people wish to attend but all are welcome, Terry Whalin |
