I know what is being talked about Bernard, that is not why i'm confused (just a little stirring by me).

If you go to the photo album and scroll down to the Discussion Birds section, the first photo is of a large number of flying Golden Plovers. That is what is being talked about.

I'll go for 900 but I'm much better at counting birds in mist nets!

Sorry, James I not too well up on this computerised world, looked at the photo, now I can see Nil was a bit far out, perhaps 800.
Thanks anyway, just back from Donna Nook thought we were too early but seal viewing good as they seem more inland than last year.
4 or 5 Snow Buntings fluttering about near entrance to beach when we arrived, gone later as we left but very many non feathered 2 legged animals had arrived by then

I will draw it to a close as there are quite a few guesses

the spotted answer in case anyone wants to argue is in the album now showing 1941 Golden Plover (all coloured blocks = 100 birds but the top green block which is the 41-----I was 20% under in my estimate but note that some guesses here were more than 50% under; it is an interesting excercise I think people will agree---I do it occasionally to get an idea as to whether my counts are erring on the side of caution or are over the top---
a 20% underestimate of the 5700 Goldies I had at Alkborough would produce a real count of 6840---

I was going to say I should get out more after being so far out with my estimate ! but after seeing Grahams dotty picture I think maybe he should get out more !!

Only kidding, definitely a worthwhile exercise as I would think most peoples counts are generally underestimates even when they perhaps think they may be overestimating .

Interesting that not one of us overestimated on this occasion.

I based my number on a quick 5 second look as that is about all you would get in the field, and would never have said there was nearly 2000 birds in that flock !

I got 900! Its quite scarey how inaccurate you can be.

I think these are really useful exercises. Thanks GPC.
