although as birders we no doubt enjoy the spectacle of all the Little Auks from what people are reporting and what I saw today I fancy that many are in a pretty poor way; I watched several birds today being swamped by huge waves as they swam about in the breakers, others avoiding attacks by large gulls and none making much progress in getting back north. Of course this is a truly numerous species and can no doubt with stand a few natural disasters but the effects of global warming may be hitting them from two angles, on the breeding grounds and with a greater incidence of gales in the autumn when inexperienced youngsters are moving for the first time;
it would be interesting to collate all the anecdotal observations of birds on the Lincs coast along with the numbers observed; is anyone up for a challenge? I had one today flying over the sea with a Snipe which was a new combination for me; the one with the Starling flock was more typical but the one which tried to land on Dean's head was certainly in need of therapy
