Can anyone recommend a very good scope shop in the South Lincs area? I don't mind travelling a bit but it must have a good range, knowledgeable staff and an opportunity to try before buying! I've tried a fair few scopes now (thank you all those kind birders) so do have a fair idea of what I'd like but it would be nice to try a few others.

25 views and nobody has any experience of a 'scope shop in Lincs/Cambs etc?

Nowhere in South Lincs to recomend that stock a good range! Suggest you get 'BIRD' mag and either deal mail order or travel to them. Best of all wait until next years Bird Fair at Rutland....best range and prices in one place!

Next years Birdfair is way off, even I wouldn't want to wait that long :wink:

Sascha,

Why not try an Optics Day, In Focus do them, and if you contact them beforehand and mention what your after they hopefully would bring them along for you to try. Look on their website for upcoming events.

Many thanks for the info, I'll have a look at their website.

Has anyone tried CleySpy in Norfolk? They've been recommended to me as being helpful and seem to have a large stock.

Hi Sascha. I can recommend Cley Spy as a good place to try lots of optics as they have the facility. I found them quite expensive though. Once you decide what you want try London Camera Exchange in Lincoln. They have always been reasonable. Mention Lincs Bird Club as I know 3 of us have recently bought new scopes from them!

Thanks for the tips.

And while I'm here............. :D ..............is there any advantage to be gained by using a straight scope rather than an angled one apart from the obvious immediate ease of use aspect (for those of us not used to angled viewing)?

Despite initial appearances, you'll almost certainly find an angled scope easier to use than a straight one. Try them, and you'll not be wanting a straight one!

There is also the shop at RSPB Titchwell Marsh where you can try out a few scopes, and In Focus is in Titchwell village. Both are worth trying.

I agree with Paul re the straight scopes. i've had one for 30 years but having tried an angled scope I've found it much easier to use in hides.
