As fully paid up members, the cost of membership is very reasonable, and for our money we have had plenty of enjoyment from the forum  , and it has proved invaluable to continually educating us re the wonderful wildlife of Lincolnshire :D ! Money well spent!

Surely this dictate is not only pointless but counter-productive; one source of information has already been lost and the whole point of this forum was the free transfer of information on sightings was it not? Freedom of expression should not be constrained by membership of a political party or organisation. This seems to be a case of "all birders are equal but some are more equal than others" with apologies to GO.

Non members can pass information to the webmaster or another member to be placed on here. Too much freedom of expression has blighted the LBC site. Several birders don't place info here because of the nonsensical responses they get back from other contributors so they too have been 'lost'. Paying to join is a small indication that you might take the site a little more seriously. Furthermore, this site has to be paid for so it should be the responsibility of those who want to use it to pay for it. Freedom of expression has never been free.

John

If non club members have to submit bird news via e-mail by the time it gets on it will be old news.
Re the point about contributors being sensitive to replies, perhaps they should be more thick skinned.
Maybe the old Yahoo Lincs Bird Club should be resurrected, I'm still a member but few use it. I preferred it to the forum as you get the e-mails delivered direct to your home

I quite often see postings giving out links to other sites. I'm sure you wouldn't want to join all of the links so that you could see the info.

Geoff until such a time as we're all walking about in the field with PDAs logged on all news on here will be old. If you want greater immediacy you need pager and phone contact.

Andy. You're right you shouldn't have to join all those sites. I think the problem here is that this site has been seen as separate from the LBC. It's now being brought firmly under the auspices of the LBC. When the annual reports died after 1996 membership waned. A successful bird club needs membership to raise funds to produce reports and newsletters and to run a website and perhaps this initiative might encourage people to join and the lBC might eventually get back on track as regards the Bird Report. At the very least all the users of this site will know that they are equal subscribers and not subsidising others.

John

Hiya John, I appreciate the difficulties in running a club but have the philosophy that if a club can be sophisticated enough to be able to produce a web site then it has achieved a magnificent window to advertise itself. Through the web site inspiration and admiration generate interest beyond the casual visit and nurtures commitment and community. I would rather be drawn to a cause than halted at a gate and given an ultimatum.

I respect the decision to create the gateway but feel it limits progress.

I agree, it could kill off the website.
I only rejoined the club because of the new annual ! report. The best way to keep the club going is to keep the reports coming.

The problem is that there are so many 'clubs' to join and it ends up costing quite a lot - RSPB, LWT, LBC, YWT (sorry for mentioning somewhere out of Lincs but wanted to make a point), some nature reserves and then things like birdguides and so on. Where do you draw the line?
The reason I liked this site was that I could log my sightings knowing that the county recorder would be able to take note and also that if I saw anything unusual I could let others know, who may want to share in that (for example the two birds I saw a couple of weeks ago that I'm not allowed to mention now - for valid reasons). It also meant that I could read about other things that had been seen in the area (although I've only actually ever been to see one of them - the Stone Curlew). I felt I was providing as much of a 'service' by logging my sightings as the forum was providing for me by allowing me to read about sightings. Now I believe that many people will not post their sightings and some birds will be missed and not logged.
