Post subject:  Map References

Hi. As a newbie to this forum I wondered if anyone could explain the map references given on the forum pertaining to bird locations. I've seen them given for the great grey shrike etc. Can anyone tell me which maps are the reference please. I'm heading down into South Lincolnshire on Saturday and am looking for the spot where the GGS has been spotted. Thanks.

Hi Mark,

The references given are usually those from Ordnance Survey maps - as in the case of the recent Cattle Egret at Saltfleetby. Personally, I prefer post codes which can be fed into the sat nav.
The nearest post code for the Great Grey Shrike at Deeping High Bank is PE11 3DY. This is not exactly where the bird shows from time to time, but it is close. Once you get alongside the River Welland look for the green bridge that crosses it. Walk over the bridge and check the rough ground near the sluice. Further along the Welland, heading for the Deeping Lakes LWT Reserve, watch out for Great White Egret and Long-tailed Duck on, and beside the river.
At the Deeping Reserve, Long-eared Owls are usually showing from the main hide,

Roy.

Hi Mark,

There is a good website for this:

http://www.bnhs.co.uk/focuson/grabagridref/html/

Where you can type in a grid/map reference and it will show you on both satellite and os map where it is, also you will be able to take your own grid reference for future sightings by dragging the arrow on the map to the location.

All the best.
