Throughout June I noted a Willow Warbler imitating Chiff Chaff. I briefly presumed this was an odd Chiff Chaff variation - they are known for going off-script. After careful listening I noticed that this rapid CC phrase occurred within the usual WW's descending song and then observed the bird giving this song from a hedge.

I have uploaded some recordings and shared a link to an article on this noted behaviour on my blog: http://jjf-gy.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/patch-willow-warbler-imitating-chiff.html

Regards,

Josh

Fascinating! Has that phenomenon been recorded/ reported anywhere else?

Hi Jim,

It has been noted elsewhere and with other species being imitated: http://deanar.org.uk/general/articles/wwmixedsong.htm

Regards,

Josh

Thanks, Josh - I never knew this. I shall pay close attention when I next hear a Willow Warbler - probably not until next year unless there's a bit of sub song activity over the next few weeks.

I found another Willow Warbler this evening again imitating Chiffchaff - have uploaded the recording to the blog: http://jjf-gy.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/willow-warbler-chiffchaff-imitation.html

I wonder if a chiffchaff could turn the tables by imitating a willow warbler.
