I got a query from Steve Ryland about a colour ringed Starling in a Nettleham garden 22nd June. I assumed that it was a local bird but (thanks to Stuart Britton) it seems it was ringed in Norfolk.

I'm surprised that a juv SG should travel so far so young

This came today:

Hi John
Wow! That's fantastic. Please thank Steve Ryland for getting a photo, I can't believe it's travelled so far!

Starling K3V (BTO metal ring number LH94701) was ringed in my Nunnery Drive, Thetford, Norfolk, IP24 3EP garden as a recently fledged juvenile on 30/05/15.

I've been ringing Starlings in my garden for the last 4yrs but this is the first year of my colour ringing RAS project for the BTO. So far I have had sightings of Juveniles in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and now Lincolnshire. I knew they dispersed but it's amazing to find out how far. And will they return this way?
Thank you so much for letting me know, please spread the work to fellow birders to keep an eye out for these yellow ringed birds. They are a fascinating species. You have made a bird ringer very happy!

Please could you let me know Steve's address/postcode and email (or I can submit your email address if he doesn't have one) so I can enter it in my records, have you submitted the sighting to the BTO or are you happy for me to do it when I enter my data? Steve will still receive notification of his sighting from the BTO.

Please let me know if you require any further details.

Best Wishes
Jo Lashwood
