Baumber Park, 16th June. On what at last could be described as a pleasant summer's day I saw my first fledged brood of 4 swallows being fed near 'Bullwinkles' garage in the village. From my own unscientific observations I would say that breeding Swallow pairs are in above average numbers in and around the village and have been attempting to use nest sites that have not been used for a number of years. House Martins having arrived in smaller numbers earlier appear to have had a late influx which are now busy settling down to nest building. The current national survey will no doubt report later on how their numbers are doing. Finally, more positive news from me. I have been seeing more Song Thrushes in this locality this spring, evident by plenty of sightings and territorial birds singing. First broods are now well fledged and I know of a number of snail anvil sites. I hope I have managed to put a more positive spin into the birding world to counter all the negative news that tends to get banded about ! Mike |

I would definitely agree Michael that Song Thrushes are on the up. I've seen more in Dunsby than I have for many years. Hopefully this will be reflected in the Breeding Bird Survey results for 2015. Hugh Dorrington |
