An unexpected delight this morning. Sat on the far Chowder bench a wader flew low across the distant mud heading directly towards me. A turnstone. A turnstone in full summer plumage and it landed on the spoil heap in front on me to feed. The chestnut on it's back shone amongst the patchwork of black and white. The pied blobs looked completely random but when the bird looked at me the symmetry was obvious. Black Zorro eye patches, streaked crown and a whole 'rock pool' pattern around it's head and neck. A DNA design for success in the high arctic and I mused at what landscape this bird will wander through this summer
