I've just completed my rounds of Tit nest boxes in Market Rasen and Kirmond le Mire and it's been a bumper year. Out of over 40 occupied boxes there have been no failed broods which is unprecented. The average brood size for Blue Tits has been just over 8 and Great Tit 7 with most of them about ready to fledge. All information will be submitted to the BTO Nest Record Scheme.

Do any of the pairs go on to have second or third broods?

Also, is it better to clean/disinfect the boxes at the end of the season or to leave well alone?

Unless the first attempt fails then it is extremely rare for Blue and Great Tits to have a second brood. They have large clutch sizes (7-13+) so literally put all their eggs in one basket. With 100+ boxes to check at least three times, I don't have the time to empty them and would never disinfect them.

Overseeing 100-plus boxes is a mammoth task, but, as a general principle, is it best practice to empty/clean nest boxes at the end of the breeding season (to clear parasites) or just lo leave well alone? Or doesn't it make a scrap of difference?

What would you advise for someone with two or three boxes in the garden?

Jim,
If you google "cleaning out nesting boxes" you'll get all the advice you need from the RSPB, BTO and other websites.
