On way home from hospital spent a windswept hour at this RSPB reserve. There had been a few changes since my last visit, more than a year ago. Mostly were cosmetic. A new flag post has been erected, the notice board is now next to the visitor centre and some fencing put up here and there. I asked where the sightings board was and the staff said they were having a new one [there was nothing wrong with the one they had last time I was there]. I asked what sightings had been recorded, the following had been seen in the last day or two: Black-necked Grebe, Spotted Flycatcher, Whimbrel, Yellow Wagtail plus the usual. Had a look at the assorted books but the one I wanted wasn't there. Other than going to the visitor centre I stayed in car. Plenty of Swift and Martins plus the usual gang. After leaving the reserve and going along the Fairburn road towards the A656, I looked at the flashes on the left side and there seemed a distinct lack of birds, but certainly no shortage of water. It looked as if a new flash had been made but I could be wrong. As I passed the path leading to Lin Dyke hide new signs had been erected telling people how far the hide is from the road, 480 metres if my memory serves me well. On another day I will check out all the reserve. Regards Max |
