I am going to scarborough for a couple of days next week and although not going for birdwatching just a short break away. I would like to see some fairly good birds. I am trying to twist my partners arm into dropping in on Flamborough on the way home aslon as some eastery winds finnally come! But I was wondering what other good sites are a bit closer to scarborough if not in scarborough? I would love to see both Med gull and Purple sandpiper I have seen that they are there but I am there at the right time of year? Any help on this subject would be muchly appreciated Anthony

Hi Anthony, i was there in April , check the concrete blocks by the sea wall for purple sandpipers, the harbour for gull species and the turnstones which are very approachable.

Colin.

Also worth checking out Holbeck car park for Med Gulls, seven adults reported on rocks below Holbeck on Birdguides on 18/10/11. The rocky beach below the car park also has Purple Sandpiper.

Scarborough produced no stand out birds just the tame turnstone and lots of big gulls. An hour at flamborough head yesterday did provide me with 2 lifers in 1 Red-throated diver south and a Purple sandpiper :D Lifers only coming in pairs recently :) Also had a Woodcock, Eider and a Herring gull killing and then eating a very tired Great crested grebe. Not many land migrants visable apart from the Woodcock, but Snow buntings, Twite and Firecrest were supposed to be around the area.
