Post subject:  Volucella inanis.

I returned from the dunes in the early afternoon and was amazed by the sight of a very distinctive fat wasp-like insect resting on the door of a shed. It was not an insect I had seen before and after taking some photographs, I opened the door and it buzzed away noisily to another part of the garden. Later, I spent some time researching in books and on the internet and pinned down the identification as Volucella inanis, the Lesser Hornet Hoverfly. Apparently it has a rather southern distribution in England and I would be interested to learn of any other sightings within the county.
